You know summer is in the air in NYC when avenues are shut down to make room for the same ole street fairs, year after year. Usually they alternate avenues, and stretch between major cross streets.
Today's street fair was on THIRD AVE between 23rd and 34th. Same old vendors - snake oil cleaning products, cutlery demos, dirty street meat from every culture (mexican, greek, dominican, middle-eastern, etc), cheap sunglasses and fake designer clothing & bags, NYC T-shirts and souveniers, homemade crafts, barrelled pickles, and corncobs and corndogs, ipod and cell phone accessories, credit card and newspaper subscription affiliates, and the like. Pros: Its nice for pedestrians to walk without having to deal with cars and stop lights. Cons: If you are a driver, and need to get within the vicinity, its fucking annoying. If you are looking to kill time and your stomach, these cookie cutter street fairs may be for you. |

I have noticed these small street fairs in other parts of town as well. In Spanish Harlem I saw a street closed off so that all the kids could enjoy the beautiful day running around and playing on the rides.

There was a lot going on this past weekend especially on Sunday July 16th. There was the farmers market on Union Square and then one block away going up on 4th Avenue there was another street fair. So it started on 16th street and 4th avenue but not quit sure where it ended. I wouldnt recommend eating any of the food there but there are good antiques to buy.

I think the summer street fairs are annoying. There was another one on 10th street this past weekend. The street fairs are more of a pain because they take up parking spots and when street are closed it makes for more traffic. I cant wait for these fairs to end!!
