Default 1st time visiting nyc - best area to get a hotel?

some of my friends will be visiting new york around august for a album launching gig. they are looking to stay around the manhattan area. the closest i can find is a hotel in englewood, nj just of the gwb. (its a very tight budget)!

my question is this location good to stay and use nj/ny public transportation? im thinking, if there is a bus from englewood to cross gwb i can hook up on the ny subway system; then im set.

thanks

dont know too much about englewood but i cant imagine it being a dangerous place. I am pretty sure there are trains from that area to nyc. But i 110% sure there is a bus!

yea there is def a bus from englewood but im sure you can find a decent affordable place in Manhattan - they do exist despite Manhattan having an expensive reputation

i am sure the Royal Park Hotel and Hostel on the Upper West is cheap. I saw photos of the place i highly doubt its expensive.

if its your first time visiting NYC .... you pay the bucks and stay in Times Square .... its the center of it all and you'll have access via train, cab, bus to get to any other places in the city

i agree that if you are coming to NYC for the first time you should probably stay somewhere in Times Square

if its your second or third time stay somewhere downtown where you can experience a more cultural diversity
