157 Chrystie Street
(between Delancey St & Rivington St) New York, NY 10002 (212) 673-0330 Need to raise your cholesterol? Arteries not clogged enough? Too few fat calories in your diet these days? Then get yourself to this kitschy Lower East Side institution, where a gravy boat filled with schmaltz - melted chicken fat - is as common a table top condiment as shakers of salt and pepper are anywhere else. Sammy's motto is, If there's no danger it will give you a heart attack, it isn't served . . . and he's only half kidding. The menu, a cornucopia of delights from an Eastern European Jewish cookbook, features chopped liver, stuffed cabbage, potato pancakes, kiska, kerplach, kasha varniskes, fried onions, veal chops thicker than your fist, and skirt steaks that hide your plate. Eat, drink, kibbitz, make merry - and hope you won't need an ambulance to take you to the Beth Israel ER. The food might not kill you, but your tab probably will induce cardiac arrest. |
