Just read that tourism in New York City declined in 2009 yet New York was still the most popular spot in the USA. The decline was obviously due to the world wide recession that has many people saving. Despite the recession New York City was still the most popular destination for both international and domestic tourists within the United States.
Mayor Bloomberg has projected that 2010 should be a stronger year in terms of tourism and economic growth from tourism. Hopefully he is accurate as this will boost local economic growth and maintain job security for those in the hotel and entertainment industries.
Businessweek.com reported that tourism in NYC was reported to be dismal and tourism was projected to be 10% loss from the previous year, 2008. It turned out only to be roughly 4%.

New York’s 45.25 million visitors surpassed Orlando, Florida, the home of Walt Disney Co.’s Walt Disney World, after finishing second in 2008, according to NYC & Co., the city’s marketing office. In 2009, Orlando placed second, said George Fertitta, chief executive officer of the tourism effort. “We began 2009 with a dismal forecast for the city’s tourism industry,” Fertitta said at a Brooklyn news conference today. “Our initial projections estimated a 10 percent decrease.” The actual drop was 3.9 percent.
